Lighting Lamps comparison

There is a big difference between Lamp vs Luminaire(fixture) Like the difference between the Sun vs moon, Also Quran say “It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light”.

Lamps Comparison Brief Table

Lamps Comparison Brief Table,

Green color in the previous table meaning the top advantage of the lamp type.

Filament Lamps still used for very low price and higher Rendering index.

Filament Lamps

Filament Lamps

Fluorescent Lamps is better than filament lamps in efficacy and life time but not have starting time like HID type. So commonly used in interior applications.

fluorescent Lamps

fluorescent Lamps

HID is better previous types in efficacy and life type but have starting time about 10 min. So commonly used in exterior applications while switching time is not a problem.

HID Lamps

HID Lamps

LED is better all in efficacy, life time and zero starting time but capital cost is very high.

Street Lighting Design

The top standard  of road lighting design is Rp-8-00 which is published by IES (American Standard).  Many parameters shall be considered in road lighting calculations, this post only provide brief of this calculations by both manual and software methods (the following procedure for software only).

street LTG chart

This calculations based on high pressure sodium (HPS) lamp type, which is the common lamp type for road lighting applications. even if I still preferred LED lighting system for many reasons will be explained in future post insha Allah.

I. Manual Method

Step.1: Classified the Roadway as follow:

Freeway: A divided major roadway with full control of access (no crossings at grade)-A:greater visual complexity and high traffic volumes. B: All other divided roadways with full control of access.

Expressway: A divided major roadway for through
traffic, with partial control of access (chosen for this case).

Major: That part of the roadway system that serves
as the principal network for through-traffic flow.

Collector: Roadways servicing traffic between
major and local streets.

Local: Local streets are used primarily for direct
access to residential, commercial, industrial, or
other abutting property.

Step.2: Determine the Method of calculation if Luminance (cd/m2) or Illuminance (lumen/m2-Chosen for this case),  Both methods are valid, Also

Step.3: Determine the desired illuminance level from the following table (12.0 lux).

illuminance level (lux)

illuminance level (lux),, R3 column for asphalt surface type.

Step.4: Determine The proposed Luminaiare Wattage:

Road width : 10.5 m – 3 – lanes.

Mounting height of poles is 0.7 road width (min)  . to. 1.0 road width (max)- (10 m height chosen).

Poles spacing is 3 mounting height (min)  . to. 5  mounting height (max)- (3.5 mounting height=3.5*10 m= 35 m chosen).

Utilization/maintenance factors  can be 0.4 for all roads.

So

LTG-eq

The required lumen 11025 can be achieved by 100 W sodium Luminaire at height 10 m, pole spacing 35m in single side of road with 10.5 m width.

III.Final Tips:

    • The preferred luminaire is that giving more pole spacing up to 5 mounting height.
    • The preferred luminaire is that giving wide-thin photmetric in sides of pole and lit the road with out losses of light on up or beside the pole.
    • The popular street lighting manufacturers in the world is PHILIPS, CREEschreder lighting.
